Oh, and the third generation of the German maker's flagship sedan is a great drive, too.

The first A8 debuted in 1994 and charted a course for Audi to build elegant, power-ful, all-wheel-drive übersedans to compete against flagship offerings from Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The second-gen car, launched in 2002, raised the bar even higher, expanding Audi's use of aluminum for the structure, and it came loaded with additional technology, luxury and comfort features.

The all-new car, arriving in U.S. dealerships this fall, offers a long list of features aimed at giving drivers an even sportier, safer, more comfortable and more luxurious ride.

The new A8's aluminum spaceframe chassis weighs just 508 pounds, which Audi says is 40 percent lighter than if it were made of steel. Saving weight in the frame allowed Audi to pack the car with other goodies that will delight and surprise.

“This car represents pure passion that is Audi,” company CEO Rupert Stadler said at the car's launch in the south of Spain.

Audi engineers don't seem to have left anything on the table in developing the new car. For the United States, a new 4.2-liter direct-fuel-injection (Audi calls it Fuel Stratified Injection) V8 makes 372 hp at 6,800 rpm and 328 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. The engine is mated to an all-new, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Audi's quattro AWD system is standard.

The new V8 is nearly 20 percent more efficient than the one in the outgoing car, meaning that while running on premium fuel, the EPA combined city and highway mileage estimate is 25 mpg.

The V8 is potent, sounds terrific under full throttle and easily propels the 4,045-pound car from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The most striking features on the exterior are the winglike LED headlights that, in combination with the single-frame chrome grille and air inlets, create a characteristic face. Audi introduced LED headlights in the R8 sports car, but they are taken to a new level in the A8, giving the car an unmistakable appearance, even during the day. The LEDs, which emit a light similar to daylight, are zero-maintenance and designed to last for the life of the vehicle. Fog lights are integrated into the headlight design, so in cars that have adaptive cruise control, the holes where fog lights normally would be are filled with radar cameras. And the new adaptive cruise control has a stop-and-go feature that will bring the car to a complete stop behind the vehicle in front and take off again when that car moves.

Audi has long been viewed as a leader in interior designs, and this new A8 is simply the best in a long line of comfortable, beautiful, swaddling cockpits. The seats, dash and door panels use soft leather, and there's ample hand-finished wood and aluminum on the dash and console surfaces. The leather and wood beg you to reach out and touch them.

New 22-way power-adjustable front seats are heated and cooled and have a massage feature to help refresh you on a long drive. And we highly recommend the optional 19-speaker, 1,460-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system. Satellite radio and an iPod interface are included.

Also new is an updated version of Audi's Multi Media Interface that, for the first time, uses a touch pad for input. The standard feature lets driver or passenger enter information via the touch pad, which recognizes both letters and numbers, in a variety of languages. The touch pad replaces a joystick for navigating through the screens.

You can use the touch pad to enter an address, a map location or a point of interest or for map scrolling. Six numbers on the pad can be used to select radio presets. We found the system easy to learn and use--it is highly intuitive, something we've appreciated in Audi's MMI for years.

And speaking of the navigation system, Google Earth maps with points of interest are offered for the first time. The system features weather forecasts for up to three locations, plus streaming news. Audi has not yet selected a wireless carrier, but officials say the cars will come with six months to a year of free service. Customers can then decide whether to continue the service. A picture of 2011 Audi A8 interiorAudi A view of the interior of the 2011 Audi A8.

Other available electronic features are a blind-spot warning system and lane-assist warning. On the safety side, Audi's Pre Sense detects an imminent crash from either the front or the rear, and it pretensions the seatbelts, rolls up the windows, locks the doors, preloads the brake-assist feature and works in conjunction with the air suspension system to minimize brake dive.

Available options also include night vision with pedestrian-recognition software and a rear-seat entertainment package with dual 10-inch screens and wireless Bluetooth headsets.

The adaptive air suspension and controlled damping with the Audi drive-select dynamics system comes standard. We switched between comfort and dynamic several times, settling on the dynamic mode for most of our drive. Not only does it firm up the ride a bit, but it also increases the throttle response and keeps the transmission in a lower gear longer, adding to the sporty feel.

The new A8 comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels and 235/60R-17 all-season tires. Dynamic steering is available as an option.

At the launch of the second-generation car in 2002, we noted that the A8 felt and drove like a much smaller car. This new model continues that sporty feeling. The combination of direct, crisp steering and adaptable suspension and chassis, not to mention the ample power under the hood, provides a sports-car-like response in a full-size luxury sedan.

Only regular-wheelbase models were offered for tests, which will make up only 20 percent of U.S. A8 sales. Americans like the extra five inches of rear-seat space offered in the L version. When the A8 debuts in the States, both regular- and long-wheelbase cars will be available.

Audi prides itself on its engineering prowess and forward thinking. As flagships go, the new A8, from its elegant good looks to its sporty drive and bevy of electronic goodies, waves the Audi banner like none before.

2011 AUDI A8

ON SALE: Fall

BASE PRICE: $78,000 (est)

DRIVETRAIN: 4.2-liter, 372-hp, 328-lb-ft V8; AWD, eight-speed automatic with Tiptronic

CURB WEIGHT:4,045 lb

0-62 MPH: 5.7 sec (mfr)

FUEL ECONOMY (EPA): 25 mpgjornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-38236827718433371582010-02-23T19:20:00.001-08:002010-02-23T19:20:54.183-08:002010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 192px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw6Ze2GpeqYFv9HYA7FEsQvxsocIf4ctaFJF5Fb9qIlzqShb7pvVeHTwPPwpaRhyRC2v2zOcSW0_isltgudu7kNTh43xDOyN8SHjJhZQNmH04Q65iYVGPJBZItvfHuN-gloCvg7m9MFag/s320/benz-glk.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441644648649785282" />
SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: If you don't have to have a third row of seats, or cargo capacity fit for a king and his court, consider the GLK350. In the luxury-small-ute category, this is as good as they get.

Unlike the underwhelming BMW X3 or the Lincoln MKX, the Mercedes delivers all the goods when it comes to interior features, trim and appointments. The GLK also delivers where it counts, in ride quality, handling and power. In Comfort setting, the handling is steady without too much harshness in the ride, making it just right for all-around driving. The steering can feel a little overboosted at times, but not so much that it's completely out of touch with the road. The 3.5-liter V6 provides more than enough scoot, though it sometimes takes the seven-speed tranny some time to catch up with the right foot's demands.

At the risk of attracting hate mail, I found the GLK's alleged Subaru Forester-esque appearance one of its strong suits--but then, I like the Forester. To me, this is a Forester Deluxe, with all the trappings Subaru could never try to foist on its value-minded buyers. I could do without the high, wide rocker panel, however--it's nearly impossible to clear without either smudging it with a shoe or picking up mud on a pant leg.

That brings me to price: I've heard the whining about pricing for the GLK and I don't get it. Its most direct competitor, the BMW X3, is priced almost identically, while others are above and below, mostly depending on equipment. Probably if you're buying strictly on seats, space and equipment for the money, an Acura MDX is your best bet in this price range. But if Mercedes means anything--and in this vehicle, it does--the GLK is worth a close look.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I enjoyed the GLK experience more than I thought. From a size standpoint, the GLK felt substantially more nimble than, say, the ML, but the steering felt a bit twitchy. Minor steering-wheel inputs made rather large adjustments on the highway. The V6 was more than capable, and getting a seven-speed transmission was a surprise. I wouldn't have thought a small ute with a small engine would warrant that many cogs.

The interior was nicely appointed in the Mercedes way and the ride was pretty good, even on our frost-heaved roadways. I would agree with Bob, the GLK seems appropriately priced, considering the vehicle's appointments and capabilities.

MOTORSPORTS EDITOR MAC MORRISON: You're definitely paying a premium for the M-B badge, but the GLK is a solid piece of work. I like the exterior styling, and the interior is spot-on in terms of what you should expect on a vehicle carrying the three-pointed star.

However, this model suffers from the same thing as just about all small SUVs, though: not large enough to smash the practicality chart, but still large and utilitarian enough to keep the fun factor down. I disagree with Bob that the engine provides "more than enough" power; I would say "just enough." The transmission is slow to react, which at times adds to the perception that you need more from the V6. I also found the steering to be less intuitive than I would like, and the brakes require a strong shove before they really begin to bite.

That said, you certainly are not going to buy this SUV expecting a top-shelf sporting experience, but rather a mid-priced luxury ute that comes standard with a fair amount of panache factor. The GLK delivers in that department.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350

Base Price: $36,775

As-Tested Price: $45,935

Drivetrain: 3.5-liter V6; AWD, seven-speed automatic

Output: 268 hp @ 6,000 rpm, 258 lb-ft @ 2,400-5,000 rpm

Curb Weight: 4,036 lb

Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 18/17.7 mpg

Options: Multimedia package including rearview camera, voice control for telephone/radio/navigation, COMAND system with hard-drive navigation, premium sound, Gracenote media database, in-dash six-disc DVD/CD changer, 7-inch color display, 6GB hard drive with music register ($3,350); premium package including garage-door opener, rearview mirror with integrated compass, auto-dimming driver's side and rearview mirrors, memory package for driver seat, exterior mirror and steering column, rain sensor, satellite radio, power liftgate, panorama sunroof, 115V AC outlet ($3,150); sport appearance package with 20-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, aluminum roof rails ($970); heated front seats ($740); tele aid ($650); iPod/MP3 media interface ($300)jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-41899444443262876402009-12-17T05:26:00.002-08:002009-12-17T05:30:39.390-08:00Tips for buying used vans<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 147px; height: 110px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgesT1N7c1LZ05N1i-ItoQ3t9mLLFyJAuyaMaM9JM3hHyEVjpsVf21nYgXJ7MV74v3qRH3b4Yo4CZBOQHVKC9BjoyiD4Izf1x2j-7lftu58agHxxCpWYXoI_MQ055rI9bJ8ivID76TjKdg/s320/imagesCAK3TNK3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416196987963428514" />
With the economy encountering an enormous slow down, some companies are holding onto their assets and others are throwing away their extras and making their businesses more efficient. It means that right now is the best time to purchase used goods, if you have money. Additionally, buying a used van is also one of a good idea, since there are a lot of used vans that are not all second-hand or old.

The price of used van is a bit more speculative than a new van. You may be expected to pay a little more when you are buying a used van with steering, power windows, air conditioning and a very low mileage. The consumption of gas is also very essential, and a used van with a lesser gas consumption may also cost a bit more. The price of the used vans is also depending on wear and tear and vehicle repair history.

If you decide to purchase used vans via a dealer, negotiating the price will be easy. Play rival dealers – like Renault, Opel and Nissan – against each other and get online to know if the van that you need is more inexpensive somewhere else in the country.

Unfortunately not all used car salesmen will give you the truth about the car that you are going to purchase, so you need to think about many things before you are buying used vans. When you are looking for the best van that meet your needs, you should take into account what you wish it for, what size it should be and how much work it will have to do. It is necessary for you to have a bright idea of what brand and model of the van you want to buy before you begin searching for a great deal.

It is much more important to test drive a used van than a new van. Used vans can differ extremely based on how they have been driven in the past time. There are a lot of factors to be inspected on a test drive, such as engine, gearbox, mileage, brakes and tires.

When you figure out the perfect van in your mind, seek for a good insurance deal for your van. It is actually simple to compare prices in the internet, but remember not to simply pick the most inexpensive cover. It is best to choose the van insurance that gives you the most cover for your cash, making sure you own the best cover in the case of a claim or accident and the best payout too.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-1949823627111687702009-12-17T05:26:00.001-08:002009-12-17T05:26:51.957-08:00Automobile Lemon Law - Lemon Law specificsIt is common for lawyers to file frivolous suits that are unable to meet the lemon laws rules and guidelines. Many times the lawyer does not make sure that the consumer has followed through with the guidelines set forth by their state and the federal government. A consumer should seek the professional knowledge of a lawyer who is trained in this type of law for specific guidelines in their state that must be followed. The federal government has rules that must be followed, as well as each of the states has certain laws that must be followed. Below are some of those states laws.

Alaska

In order to bring suit in Alaska over lemon laws, the consumer's vehicle must have had three repairs that went unfixed, or they must have went thirty days with the vehicle being out of commission, within one year of purchase or less. Alaska requires certified notification to the seller of their inability to correct the problem after several attempts. It should also be noted to the seller that the consumer demands that a replacement be supplied, or a full refund within 60 days, after this the manufacturer or dealer will have thirty days to correct the problem on last time.

California

Here it is almost the same laws, except that the repairs have to been attempted four times with no correction, or thirty days without the vehicle in service. These thirty days can be spread out within eighteen months or 18,000 miles. This or at least a reasonable amount of repair attempts must have been made. In California, if you are thinking of filing suit, you must first notify the manufacturer in writing and allow the vehicle to be repaired by them within thirty days. Since 2001, only two repair tries are needed to constitute a lemon when safety is a concern that could possibly end in death or serious bodily harm.

Georgia

Here it is required that only three attempts have been made without correcting the problem, but they must be done consecutively and within 24,000 miles, but less than twenty four months. Only one failed attempt is need for safety concerns such as brake defects, or malfunctioning steering control during the first year, or under 12,000 miles. The consumer must notify by certified letter the dealer or manufacturer, which will include a receipt. They then have seven days to contact the customer about repairs, and they have fourteen days to complete the repair.

Iowa

Here it is only needed that three attempts have been made for a repair. One failed repair on a safety concern, or thirty days with the vehicle being out of commission in two years, or 24,000 miles. A standard written notice, certified or registered mail, the manufacturer has to be given ample opportunity to make repairs within ten days of the notice.

As shown here, each state's laws may differ slightly, but each state has an arbitration method, although it is not necessarily mandatory or is it always needed or wanted.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-46559716925713028372009-12-17T05:25:00.000-08:002009-12-17T05:26:14.037-08:00Car Accessories: Improving the Value of Your CarIndeed having car accessories installed to your vehicle can bring great fun and excitement for many car owners. We have been using them since childhood. People of any age love these cars and if you are a car fan, you would surely want to have your own Electric Car (EC). Usually, the inexpensive electric cars do not come with the expected speed. To overcome this problem, you can always build your own electric car by researching a little. In this particular article, I am going to give you foreword about electric cars.

A normal EC consists of two major components, an engine and a battery. If both of these components are used properly, the final EC will be much better than the old ones you purchased from market. Chassis is another part of the EC which is as important as battery or engine. A better chassis will give an attractive look to your electric car and then you can even sell your EC.

This is the brief introduction to EC. Now, I will move ahead with building a trailer introduction. Building a trailer would sound very complicated at first but if you research on internet, you would find a lot of guides on how you can build your own trailer. It saves money which you would pay to mechanic otherwise, it gives you experience and on second try you would come up with an appealing trailer which would be much better than the first one. Tools, equipments, components you usually require to build a trailer are; axle kit, weight capacity, frame, suspension. If you are very new to this, ask for the help of some experienced person. That will save your time as well as cost.

This is a small article which gives brief introduction to electric cars and how to build a trailer. One small tip at the end, do you experiments in open environment where you have enough space to carry out the process.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-71559204039916933422009-12-17T05:21:00.000-08:002009-12-17T05:22:35.051-08:00How does a car become ‘Car of the Year’ and why should you buy one?Choosing a car can be a long, drawn out process that could take months before you finally make a decision on your next purchase. A lot of us will have preferences on brands and models that we may have either learnt to drive in or which friends or family members who have recommended to us. Likewise there are plenty of TV shows and magazines full of car reviews, filling us in on the pros and cons of each car.

One good indicator of a good car is the ‘Car of the Year’ award, an award given to a car that, based on a range of criteria, has been chosen as the best car of the year - typically a model that has been released that year. The award is voted for by motoring journalists so they have the buyer’s interests at heart in their judgements which are based on a number of factors such as:

Design
Obviously how the car looks, but also with modern technology helping improve the features of cars the design is really important these days.

Comfort
You ideally want a car that is comfortable, especially during long trips. A lot of cars now have new comfort perks such as heated seats and almost every adjustment can be made to the seats height, angle and support which all contribute to the comfort level of a car.

Safety
The safety rating of any new car is a vital statistic that drivers, especially parents, will be concerned about. Seatbelts and airbags as well as technological advancements like parking sensors and some models even alert you if you drift out of your lane on the motorway.

Economy
The cost of fuel and motoring in general is a hot topic these days and so you ideally want a car that can really go the distance between visits to the petrol station.

Handling and Performance
Obviously you want a car that performs well and doesn’t have any annoying characteristics such as poor acceleration or steering.

Price
Whilst the price of a great car is subjective, what the criteria that the Car of the Year organisation measure is how well placed a vehicle is, a car that is priced low enough to appeal to many different drivers is going to score well in this category.

Driver Satisfaction
Lastly and most importantly, is the satisfaction of the drive. Does the car drive well? Does it have any annoying features? Is the car prone to breaking down or parts breaking? These are all contributing factors to how satisfying the car is to drive.

If you’re looking at getting a new or used car then do your homework first. While there are people who can still search for a brand new car, lots of people are turning to the local used car dealers for various reasons, including cost saving but quality vehicles selections. Meanwhile others prefer to go with private seller as they want to negotiate directly with seller rather than dealing with dealership. One advantage of going with private seller would be the competitive price over the used car dealers. Usually you can find cheaper price on the cars by the roadside or in the local newspapers. The main reason that they don't have major sales overheads therefore there are no more extra costs involved with the cars for sale. Also private sellers tend to sell their vehicles quick, thus are willing to go down with the price tag after negotiating with potential buyers.

At the same time, you will very likely pay more if you go with used car dealership, but there is good side of it. It usually comes with warranty for few years, which will give you a peace of mind compared to buying from private sellers. Used car dealers will perform thorough inspections on the vehicles, fix any problems and provide their service warranty along with the sale. That is a big advantage as you will never know what could have happened to that particular used car if you are not familiar with all the history of it. The warranty itself has value in terms that the vehicle has been inspected, serviced and any problems have been resolved by the dealer already, therefore it is guaranteed for the specified period of time for any future issues. Besides it, there are few more advantages if you go with local dealerships such as extra services including roadside assistance, multiple models and options to choose from, and saving times spending at one place rather than drive around to just take a look at the car from the private seller.

Used car dealers offer a wide range of models and vehicles varieties so that buyers can have many options to choose. At the same time, quite a few different financing options are available from the dealers via their financial associates with long history of success in the business. But when you choose the used car dealer, you need to ensure that they are registered car dealers with proven history of business. You don't want to just buy any car from anyone, but go with good dealer with reputation. In order to locate reputable used car dealers, you could look up the local Better Business Bureau for reliability reports of the particular car dealers. You can also check with your friends or family members who already bought the car from them and ask for the review.

Finding a good used car dealer in your local area is the first step towards valuable investment and it is always best to utilize your human network and ask them for any questions you have before make a decision on car buying.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-2247614716215652992009-12-05T09:42:00.000-08:002009-12-05T09:43:35.550-08:00BMW X5 xDrive35d<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 192px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmleIfYb-6ARChiCiZAz8zntA2cRRfSnFaWKMY2Itr-scHEwzKEBeRhMGJlURbBxAT34PTz35K8m6-fGeIs4vVaRfbR9CXHFe6tbnq_8dSdVnTmTVgSyo4noRzTb7_U9G5gsnWlRhiRi4/s320/x5-diesel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411809127719990306" />
EDITOR WES RAYNAL: I've always liked the facelift BMW gave the X5 a while back. I think it is one of the better-looking utes on the market.

Though it still drives like a big heavy truck, dynamically the BMW is head and shoulders above most any other ute on the market. The BMW's ride is smooth and more fluid. There's solidity to this truck that you just don't find with most SUVs.

The diesel, while just a little gruff, especially at idle, is mostly smooth, feels nice, offers plenty of torque and fits perfectly with this six-speed transmission. I don't remember once sniffing any diesel fumes.

However, iDrive is still annoying as hell, even in its new simpler form.

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT JONATHAN WONG: When it comes to midsize SUVs, the best-handling ones you'll find are BMW's X5 and the Infiniti FX. Every time I step out from behind the wheel of an X5, I find myself surprised that I had been driving a two-and-a-half ton vehicle. Don't get me wrong, it's no sports car, but an impressive handler in SUV terms.

Flick the nicely weighted steering wheel in either direction to have the X5 respond quickly with little roll. Overall, the body is well controlled with hardly any dive under braking and feels really planted in all situations, be it an expressway-entrance ramp or stomping down city roadways.

Speaking of the city, the stiff suspension still offers enough give to deliver a comfortable ride. This suspension setup is just another example of how BMW is so good at balancing performance and comfort.

As Raynal points out, it's well built with soft and nice-looking materials throughout the cabin, which has a good number of cubbies to hold stuff. Our test car is loaded to the brim with $20,000 worth of options, which is nice. It's just that more than $70,000, the X5 is rather difficult to comprehend at first.

However, the big news here is BMW's clean diesel turbocharged I6 under the hood, and it's a good piece. When it comes to base price, it falls nicely in between the gas I6 and the V8 model. There's a premium of $3,700 for the diesel over the gas I6 and it undercuts the V8 by a cool $5,000. Oh, and if you buy the diesel, you are eligible for up to a $1,800 tax credit under the IRS's advanced lean-burn technology motor-vehicle tax credit. Not too shabby.

With monster torque, the engine scoots the X5 up to speed with ease. According to BMW, 0 to 60 mph comes in 6.9 seconds. It remains smooth as the revs build, and you would have a tough time realizing it's a diesel if you weren't paying attention. There is a little clanking initially at idle and launch, but that's it.

Topping things off is the great range diesels allow for. A little more than a half a tank of fuel got us a little more than 300 miles with mixed driving.

The downside? Most diesel-fuel pumps I've used have been nasty.

2009 BMW X5 xDrive35d

In Fleet: April 3-17

Base Price: $52,025

As-Tested Price: $72,120

Drivetrain: 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged diesel I6; AWD, six-speed automatic

Output: 265 hp @ 4,200 rpm, 425 lb-ft @ 1,750-2,250 rpm

Curb Weight: 5,225 lb

Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 22/21.5 mpg

Options: Sport package including 19-inch wheels with all-season tires, electronic damping control, sports leather steering wheel, comfort seats with lumbar support, shadowline trim, anthracite headliner ($3,700); premium package including automatic tailgate operation, universal garage-door opener, digital compass mirror, auto-dimming mirrors, lumbar support, BMW assist ($3,400); technology package including rear-view camera, park distance control, navigation system ($2,600); active ventilation seat package including active seat for driver, front ventilated seats ($2,100); premium sound package including premium hi-fi system, six-disc DVD changer ($1,850); rear-seat entertainment ($1,700); cold-weather package including heated steering, ski bag, heated front seats, heated rear seats, retractable headlight washers ($1,250); head-up display ($1,200); comfort access system ($1,000); satellite radio with one-year subscription ($595); iPod and USB adapter ($400); running boards ($300)

For more Car Reviews for new cars, trucks, SUVs, vans and crossovers, click here.

Read more: http://www.autoweek.com/article/20091204/CARREVIEWS/912049996#ixzz0YpyXGaBijornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-51500752919971532192009-12-05T09:41:00.000-08:002009-12-05T09:42:42.471-08:00BMW unleashes ActiveHybrid X6<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 192px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3SASsFhY21Rnly29d8Q1944YpkmkHH7ZhScG4mbpAyJIXwQ56MBi87HMevK9HTrAcCjD3qHFHkdlD7GT69yzjS0_LMGtvQo5eQwIBJqaI7u5wCt5txPPSQlyxA-Hqu5fZAxKbgokzFlk/s320/BMW-ActiveHybrid-X6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411808881076782370" />
Earlier this fall, Honda and its luxury division, Acura, both introduced contenders in the ever-growing field of fastback-utility crossovers. Now jumping into the fray is BMW’s ActiveHybrid X6.

BMW’s expansion of its “sports activity vehicle” line continues, this time in a full-hybrid version. By combining BMW’s 4.4-liter, 400-hp, twin-turbo, direct-injection engine with two electric motors producing 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively, the net result is a 480-hp output with 575 lb-ft of twist. As hefty as the X6 is (at 5,401 pounds), the hybrid powerplant delivers 0-to-60-mph performance to the tune of 5.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph.

A two-mode seven-speed automatic trans-mission (codeveloped with General Motors and used in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra hybrids) gets the power to all four wheels. The first stage allows for running at startup and during normal city driving. The second mode facilitates high-speed highway operation. A pure electric “run-silent” mode also exists, enabling the ActiveHybrid X6 to run at speeds up to 37 mph for approximately 1.6 miles, depending on the battery’s state of charge.

Much has been done to make drivers forget they are in a hybrid. Gone is the hydraulic air-conditioner compressor. In its place, an electrical climate compressor operates while the X6 is stopped, and a voltage converter continues to supply full power to the vehicle’s 12-volt system, even when the gasoline engine shuts off at idle.

The nickel-metal-hydride battery system continues to support operations in the ActiveHybrid X6 by powering the electrically assisted power steering and Sensotronic brake actuation (SBA). With the latter, braking power comes from the regenerative electric motors, which transmit brake force to all four wheels except in a panic-stop situation that exceeds 0.3 g, when the mechanical brakes step up to assist. In addition to SBA, the ActiveHybrid X6 has the same alphabet soup of assists, from dynamic traction control (DTC) to dynamic stability control (DSC), as in the traditionally powered X6.

The powertrain is seamless, without that laggy tip-in typical of most hybrids. Steering has gone from hydraulic in the original X6 to electric here, but it still transmits good road feel to the driver.

Through stop-and-go traffic on rather uninteresting roads in south Florida, where BMW chose to hold the global launch of the vehicle, it was clear that this is still a driver’s car, even if it is a hybrid. The car rewarded the driver and made sport of slicing and dicing past the lollygaggers and out-of-towners clogging the road.

BMW says to expect about a 20 percent improvement in mileage over the nonhybrid version of the X6. EPA testing reports rate the ActiveHybrid X6 at 17 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. That’s only marginally better than the X6 xDrive 50i, which gets 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway.

BMW has built a stout vehicle that is a capable hauler of up to four people and their things, with a ride quality that rivals its gasoline-powered sibling.

The ActiveHybrid X6 has a base price of $89,725. If you can do without the hybrid powertrain, a base X6 starts at $67,125. OROSCO: I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed driving this truck, especially since I'm not a fan of big trucks--and because the look of this Ridgeline makes me think of a dog. Yes, the shape of the cab and the odd roofline that leads into the bed made me think of Clifford the Big Red Dog.

I liked the power and the heavy feel, which made me feel safe despite the rollover warning on my visor. I also liked that there was lots of room in the front and rear seats. In fact, I think you could fit a pull-out seat in the footwell of the passenger side. And there was no lack of cubby space for all items big and small.

But the dash-console setup was confusing. The odo-tach-gauge area looked basic and cheapish, while immediately to the right, the audio/navigation climate system was more hip. It's like a low-tech/high-tech split personality, and I didn't like it. But I loved how quickly the defrosters worked, and the heated seats were great. And the backup camera was much appreciated in this truck.

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: It's hard to argue with the simple practicality of the Ridgeline, which only seems to get better and smarter with age. Downsides remain that it is pricey for a unibody V6-powered truck, and one that only gets about 17 mpg. On the other hand, the trucks that fit this segment are few and are either smaller, like the Toyota Tacoma, or much bigger and heavier, like the Chevrolet Avalanche. If you want the compromise vehicle, and you're willing to compromise on load and towing to get it, the Ridgeline remains a singular value.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: Just a night in this made me miss our long-departed Ridgeline. Still not much on the looks, but it's hard to argue with the practicality of the beast. This 2009 model features such things as an updated dash with radio interface and heater controls, plus a backup camera. Very nice, and I can imagine trailer towers would love it.

I really like the versatility of the Ridgeline, with the lockable, weather-tight trunk in the truck bed, and the way the tailgate swings or drops. On the inside, you can flip up the rear seats and you have a ton of space, thanks to the flat floor.

The V6 is strong enough in this application, and I got more than 20 mpg on the highway, with 18.5 mpg overall. All things considered, this would be a pretty good choice for someone who needed a daily driver with some hauling capabilities. To avoid doing so it is important that drivers do what they can to find the best possible price for their coverage.

The best way to find such a price is to request quotes of coverage from a number of insurance providers. After doing so, drivers can make easy comparisons and determine which provider offers the best policy for them. While this may take some time, it could save the drivers hundreds and will be worth it.

An insurance policy covers the driver and vehicle for a said period of time. While drivers can research the provider and obtain any information that they require, many providers will offer discounts to drivers that purchase online.

If you do not have the time to contact a lot of insurance providers on your own, you may want to use the services of an insurance broker. Brokers work with a variety of different insurance providers and will be able to request your quotes quickly and present you with the information for your decision.

While the broker will earn a commission on the sale of the insurance policy, it will not affect the price that the driver will pay for their coverage. Therefore the benefits that a broker can provide by obtaining multiple quotes quickly should be considered.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-31663000367993357332009-12-05T09:30:00.002-08:002009-12-05T09:31:17.442-08:00Cheap Auto Insurance -- Tips To Pay LessDo you know that you might be losing money if you have a car that you've not used for months? Do you have a car that you've just forgotten about because of the headaches it gives you or something? Are you still paying premiums on such a car because you did NOT remember to remove it from your auto insurance policy?

The painful reality is that more people than you could imagine are paying higher rates than they should because of such negligence. If you made this kind of mistake then you can save yourself a lot of bucks by quickly removing an unused car or cars from your policy.

You will enjoy discounts with a number of insurers if you're part of an auto club. Although you shouldn't expect to be given huge discounts for this, each small discount you can get will add up to much when added to other such discounts.

Don't try to give false information in your bid to get cheaper rates. State things just the way they are. Insurance fraud costs us all.

If you couldn't care less about the cost to everyone in general, don't forget that your insurer is free to cancel your policy on the grounds of false representation.

This could make you lose a lot more than what you thought you would save. This is partly because of the added cost you'd bear if your policy lapses (which is what would happen if your insurer cancels your policy).

It's been estimated that insurance fraud adds up to $1,500 to the average family's insurance premium annually. Help make the world a better place by doing your bit to ensure we don't have to pay a lot more.

Policyholders who do NOT make claims for up more than 3 years get a No Claims bonus. Remember, this does not mean you might not have any cause to make a claim but that you did not file one. Therefore, if it's a minor case, handle it on your own. What you'll gain from a No Claims discount will certainly outweigh it.

Another alternative for you is to use your parents' car insurance policy. The fact that you're of driving age means that your parents belong to a better risk age group.

To take advantage of this though, you will have to live with your parents and also have the car registered in their name. If you want to be the owner of your vehicle, then be the big boy or girl and also own the higher premiums. Sorry, you cannot have both with this alternative. However, you can still make massive savings by following the link at the end of this piece.

Car Insurance For Teens

And...

Make out some time to visit a minimum of 5 insurance quotes sites that return quotes on auto insurance policies. It should require around 25 minutes.

As you visit each site, make sure you input the same details. Doing otherwise will produce misleading quotes. When you've obtained your auto insurance quotes, compare them to determine which serves your interest best in price/value.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-92087901911549238532009-12-05T09:30:00.001-08:002009-12-05T09:30:38.143-08:00Is there a Need Homeowner's Insurance?Homeowners insurance might one of those required items you need to have for your peace of mind and that of your mortgage company but there are many ways you can have all the cover you need but reduce the weekly insurance costs. We would all like to use this insurance premium more constructively thus by saving a few dollars we can put this back into things we need around the house.

Most insurance companies that retail insurance plans, other than householders insurance, will recommend individuals look over other types of policies they have. Two or more policies arranged this way can produce discounts of fifteen percent or more which can add up to a considerable saving over the course of a year.

You must also not forget to add any new expensive items to your homeowners insurance each year to guarantee continued coverage but some items will also depreciate as well, especially electronic goods. Another overlooked area is that of having too much insurance which happens when people either have insurance cover for things they do not own or where the item is already insured via another policy.

As many items claimed on householders insurance are quite low in value, a simple way to reduce your monthly premium is to increase the deductible that has been set from say 250 to 1,000 dollars. Many householders forget that other insurance savings can be made just by fitting a smoke detector and some additional locks on the windows and doors, plus things like roofing material that retards flames and even storm shutters.

Safety regulations on new homes are much stricter and most of these items will be standard so your policy payments should reflect this. People over the age of 55 will also receive insurance premium reductions and in particular if they are long term customers. Gated communities, security locks on doors and windows etc. regularly present you with lower payments.

If you have been a smoker for a long time then you will have noticed that your Homeowners insurance premium has been higher but if you have stopped smoking, a reduction is normally due thus do not forget to inform the insurer. The number of fires caused by cigarettes in the USA is over 20,000 per year therefore you can see why non-smokers can receive preferential rates.

People regularly overpay for homeowners insurance by adding the value of the land that their home resides on so remember that you only need to cover the house itself and your property, not the land. The land is more often not going to survive any problems so does not need to be insured.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-15147812389995154892009-12-05T09:29:00.001-08:002009-12-05T09:29:49.568-08:00Car Insurance For WomenIn today's world there are different categories insurance companies put drivers into , one such can be car insurance for women . Women drivers today are often offered lower rates than men today because statistics show they are safer drivers , there are many more women drivers on the road today and insurance companies have been able to gauge the differences of men and women drivers accidental rates. Men drivers are known to be more aggressive and take bigger risk ,on the other hand women drivers don't want to take dangerous risk and are easier on the road.

You may be able to save hundreds of dollars in savings every year over your present policy. The point is, you will never know for sure until you do some investigation of your own. Each insurer have their differences , some cater to women more intensively than others, some will have better claims satisfaction percentages, they all are different and it is up the the individual to do the homework studying which company will best suit their needs.

Women will prefer to have insurance that includes rode side assistance then they can call to have it towed and get a rental car with not too much worry. Insurance for the rental car should be included so the rental agency can't juice her on the extra insurance, it is important that one know ones policy very well to keep from getting into financial trouble along the way. The best way to find cheap car insurance for women is to buy from a online site because it cuts out the middle man which will take a chunk out of the cost.

If you are worried about brand name recognition you will find the top insurance companies all offer car insurance coverage through the Internet. It is also a wise idea to pay your insurance on a yearly basis. This also will save you money and time.Paying on a monthly basis is more suitable for more women because it is hard to come up with a large amount of money in today's high cost of everything but quarterly payments would save more money.

Another great thing about women car insurance is the unique features that you can find with car insurance that is designed especially for women. You will be able to investigate the addition of special incentives for women. For example many insurance companies will be able to offer women care maintenance policies and break down insurance. These are very useful for women who are traveling on the road and need quick assistance. Women will also have access to buying guides and tips for car buying from insurance companies. All of these extra features are designed exclusively for women who are purchasing car insurance.

Independent women have the skills that it takes to get the most for their money, insurance is a obstacle they can deal with and the details of the insurance policy can be tricky. The auto insurers have fine print that must be dissected in order understand what they will pay for or not pay for in case a claim is submitted, this is important because nobody wants to feel they have been misled about a policy.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-34535839806292127312009-12-05T09:28:00.002-08:002009-12-05T09:29:16.440-08:00Guide For Philadelphia Auto InsuranceWhen it comes to shopping for Philadelphia car insurance, you would always seek to get the most coverage with the least amount. One of the things they shouldn’t have to worry about is how they are going to find affordable health insurance. Our nation is currently going through a health care crisis and there are millions of people who are uninsured, these people do not have to be college graduates. Many people who do not immediately find a job think that they don’t have the money to purchase health insurance which is wrong.

They not only may be eligible for assistance with health insurance, but they may be able to purchase Affordable Short Term Health Insurance. Many college graduates haven’t even heard of short term health insurance which is one of the main reasons why this type of insurance is often overlooked. Short term health insurance is health insurance that is offered to people who are in-between jobs, just graduating college, recently hired and are waiting for coverage to kick in, or just looking for some temporary coverage as they are in a changing point in their life. This type of health insurance is mainly aimed for health individuals such as college’s students who are looking for a safety net when they are not covered. Through these affordable short term health insurance plans individuals may be covered to up to $4 million if something were to happen. One of the reasons why the amount is so high is because the people who normally purchase this type of insurance are mainly healthy people so they are normally low-risk.

Each plan is different but normally the plans cover an individual or family from anywhere between 6-12 months and depending on the type of coverage you apply for, you may be able to renew your coverage once or twice after your initial coverage runs out. This can be extremely beneficial in today’s economy because it is much harder than normal to find a job because the United States is bordering on a recession. People who may have been able to get a job a year ago may spend months and months looking for a job. Most visits to the doctor’s office, emergency room, medical tests, and even most prescriptions are covered by this type of insurance. Although the co-payment for each doctors visit may be a little higher, it is completely worth it because you won’t be paying thousands of dollars for the care you are receiving. Normally the cost of this type of insurance is between $100-$200 depending on how healthy you are when you apply for the insurance. Remember that this type of coverage does not apply to pre-existing conditions that may have happened before you purchased this type of insurance.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-2906356939455679882009-12-05T09:26:00.000-08:002009-12-05T09:27:21.198-08:00Online Car Insurance Quote Forms Save You Time and MoneyDo you Drive a Vehicle?

Lots of us have to operate and own a car in order to drive to our jobs, conduct our business, get to the store , and cart our families to school and play.

Car Drivers Need Car Insurance!

With an auto comes the need for an insurance policy. Every place in the USA requires a minimum policy in order to operate a car legally.. Besides the law, we certainly want to cover our big asset.

So we all need to pay for our premiums to provide insurance for our vehicles. You know that we have to take steps so that we get the top insurance at the cheapest rate.

Beyond that, we want to be able to find those top insurers without using up hours contacting a dozen different insurers that offer their policies in our area.

Find Auto Insurance Comparisons with Online Quotes

You can find the cheap car insurance quotes online with safe, fast, and free internet coverage queries You can enter your basic details one time, and then sit back and relax because the most competitive insurers will send you their best plans and prices.

You can use these websites to look for insurance for yourself, and for everbody in your family. You can even research all of the available car insurance discounts you may qualify for.

How do Insurers Set Rates?

Well, your own prices will be determined by many unique factors. You probably have already guessed that your driving history will matter. It seems obvious that people with few accidents will do better than those with lots of accidents.

Your Rates are Unique To You

Your age, type of car, how many miles you drive, and even where you live will affect your price. Beyond that, some insurance companies will use a credit report to determine the price!

Get Price Breaks on Your Coverage

You, and your family, may also qualify for some discounts. Safer cars, auto-safety features, anti-theft devices, and driver's education and safety classes may qualify. Insurers keep very detailed statistics about those things that their customers do, and when some things help prevent accidents, insurers tend to reward them.

So if people who take drivers education and safety classes or safety course have fewer accidents, an insurer may discount that. Likewise, some cars are cheaper to repair, or do not get involved in high claims accidents. Those vehicles will cost less to insure. Insurance companies try to use their past experience to predict the future risk of a particular applicant.

Insurers will also discount certain actions that save them money. If you combine more than one policy, they have not had to invest as much in seling policies to get the business. So a company may offer a discount for multi-policy families. You may insure multiple cars or you may insure a home and a car to take advantage of this price cut.

Again, with so many factors that can affect your car insurance, it pays to compare. Use online quote forms, and the power of the internet, to save money and time on your policy!jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-47947735952913305272009-12-05T09:24:00.000-08:002009-12-05T09:26:21.455-08:00Protect Your Farmhouse with a Best Insurance policyA Farm House is perfect choice when you are looking for some peace and quiet. It's one of the sweetest in the car business. The gearbox is fine, too. There's just the slightest bit of cowl shake over rough pavement, just a little bit of steering-column shudder. Mostly the platform is quite solid and speaking of the steering, it's as fine as any in the biz.

The seats are comfortable, and it's an easy car to drive hard or just toodle around town in. Some of the plastics inside aren't up to German snuff though and I was quite surprised, then I saw the sticker price and was appalled. BMW has a lot of guts asking this much, but on the other hand, dealers are probably discounting the hell out of it. BMW's own Web site touts low-interest financing and sweet lease deals, and you know how these things go. The manufacturer's site is only the starting point for the discounts, with more to be had at the actual dealership.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: There is a lot to love here, from the sweet little turbo motor to the crisp-shifting gearbox and the way the clutch engages at just the right spot in the pedal travel. The brake pedal is perfectly positioned to roll your foot over onto the throttle. All the little details have been paid attention to.

The driving experience is equally engaging--this is a fun-to-drive car that rewards you when you drive it hard. The car's giving you plenty of feedback, and I really didn't have any issues with cowl shake. The top operation is easy and fast, just the way it should be.

My only issue with this car is the price. Frankly, it's staggering for a car this size. I like the car, a lot, but just not at this price.

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: I echo Roger's observation on the clutch--there may not be a more perfectly weighted and properly engaging clutch in any other car. The gearbox and engine are excellent as well, perfectly matched for each other and the car. It all works right in tune with the driver.

The 1-series hardtop is hard to beat, but chopping the top off one doesn't help its dynamics. It doesn't hurt as much as similar executions in other cars, but there is some shimmy introduced to the body. And whatever bracing and extra stuff BMW did to overcome the roof surgery is severe--the car is really harsh over bumps and road imperfections, to the point where it hops around on bumps on hard corners. Nothing to worry too much about, given that the car is so well planted it recovers easily, but overall, there's an unsettled feeling to the chassis that isn't there in the hardtop.

As for the price, who says you can't make money selling small cars in America? BMW obviously can.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-85014087287440701382009-11-11T17:54:00.000-08:002009-11-11T17:57:39.089-08:00BMW 335d<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 192px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUh9CNa5_KBo18vKFIC5SOQm7d4E-b0riUSCZZivQZgRpwX1_Hq9L3YRxWf2iJCfDyBINxFOsDjykbd95fHVLbUWJu_fECIwhftm4XiuOQ0igXTw3OdzRgO4R0it6EKa0SN__8tf9lSxU/s320/2009-bmw-335d.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403030378330953298" />
Anyone who thinks Americans won't warm up to a diesel car should drive one of these. I mean, 425 lb-ft of torque has a way of turning people's heads in a different direction.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a more fun, more engaging commuter car, all things considered. Sure, you might get better fuel mileage from a Toyota Prius, and the greenies might praise you for driving a Honda Insight, but this 3-series is far more engaging to drive, all the while delivering more than 30 mpg.

My only complaint is that I'll take mine with a six-speed manual, please.

SENIOR WEB REPORTER GREG MIGLIORE: The torque is awesome, pulling you through the seat, impressing unsuspecting passengers and making passing a breeze. Mixed with the caramel interior and smooth chassis, it really makes this car a commuter's dream.

I found it to be more engaging than the E-class diesel that we had here awhile back. Again, that's probably the torque. The heavy steering is enjoyable and makes turning precise. The mpg figures are impressive, and I (and whoever else had this before me) burned through a quarter of a tank in a 133-mile interval. It seems you could save a lot of gasoline and get more function from this than a lot of hybrids.

Still, some American consumers will notice the diesel gurgle. It seemed a little louder than in the Benz in that respect.

SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: This car is perfect, and not just for the diesel snobs or the BMW snobs or the 3-series snobs or the German-car-loving snobs. This car packs thrust unlike any other 30-mpg vehicle, combined with the spot-on BMW handling and steering that make it a relative bargain at this price (I heard one critic suggest that it was a fine car considering it cost $70,000--not even close to this sticker). I love tromping on the accelerator and feeling the gobs of power punch to the rear wheels, whether you're pulling away from a dead stop or launching from 50 mph to 75 mph.

There's not a ton of room in the back seat, and the lack of a fold-down seatback makes the 3 somewhat limited. But for those who want their performance sedan and 30 mpg regardless of how they drive, I'm not sure there's a better alternative--yet.

2009 BMW 335d

In Fleet: May 7-21

As-Tested Price: $49,920

Drivetrain: 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel I6; RWD, six-speed automatic

Output: 265 hp @ 6,400 rpm, 425 lb-ft @ 1,750-2250 rpm

Curb Weight: 3,825 lb

Fuel Economy: (EPA/AW) 27/31.4 mpg

Options: Sport package including 18-inch wheels with performance tires, sport steering wheel with paddles, sport seats, sport suspension, shadowline trim ($2,150); beige Dakota leather ($1,450); satellite radio with one-year subscription ($595); comfort access system ($500); iPod and usb adapter ($400)jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7176805519980365640.post-75034022383426032622009-11-11T17:51:00.000-08:002009-11-11T17:54:22.937-08:00New V8 gives Jaguar XK<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZtTP293hpGzyxBnfT1MVGKqRaVSnBX_LvDS7NDNjc-yHjXzjKygBLBnLK3axiUJMJ6BDwK7WfgMYp-4JwnTq1Y9AgNsRtaH9DVKWwN5pQGnBUe8omxcAbublQykw0fM3YBbF5AaEk_MY/s320/AR-903109977.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403029101927619906" />
Additional ResourcesArticle
500 hp Jaguar XFR debuts at the Detroit auto showBig cats have to purr, so here’s Jaguar making sure its 2010 XK and XF do exactly that.

Under the hood is a new, direct-injection 5.0-liter V8 pumping 385 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque--both numbers up substantially from the outgoing 4.2-liter V8.

Refinement is terrific and power delivery is creamy smooth--it’s easily the equal of the German competition. The exhaust even pops and crackles evocatively on the over run. Compared with the new, hard-core supercharged XKR and XFR, the naturally aspirated V8 cars ride more smoothly, despite being more focused than soft-riding Jags of old.

Sometimes 175 mph just isn't enough. That, at least, is the view of Jaguar North America, which reckons the limited-edition XKR-S sports coupe isn't quick enough for U.S. sports-car buyers.

Knowing that AMG and Porsche specials make a big impact in the United States with sledgehammer power outputs, Jaguar NA probably has its customer radar pretty well tuned. But it means U.S. Jaguar fans will miss out on the sharpest incarnation yet of the handsome XK, created to appeal to the enthusiast leanings of two engineers.

Mike Cross, Jaguar's handling guru, and Russ Varney, XK platform chief, worked out the XKR-S in spare moments as they road-tested the suspension on drives home, directing technicians to make changes during the working day.

"We developed an XK with the chassis we fancied as our everyday driver," says Cross, "a bit more focused than our typical customer would usually want but still comfortable and safe in all road conditions, including the wet."

You notice the changes as soon as the XKR-S purrs away for the first time; the steering has a meatier feel, and the ride is firmer. The headline mechanical changes are the type that might be expected on casual examination: stiffer springs and dampers front and rear, 8 percent quickened steering rack, thicker rear antiroll bar, lighter 20-inch forged alloy wheels and wider rear tires.

The forged wheels cut unsprung weight by 10 percent. The two-stage Bilstein dampers are completely revalved, the ride height dropped slightly and the variable ratio/assist ZF rack quickened by 10 percent. Jaguar also worked with Pirelli to develop bespoke tires for the XKR-S.
The effect is to stiffen the XKR-S's response and sharpen the feedback to the driver--just what enthusiasts expect.

The XKR-S doesn't have more power, but its standard 420-hp, supercharged 4.2-liter V8 is no slouch, and the new chassis makes it easier to exploit more of the performance in corners, because it gives the driver confidence, knowing that those wide rear boots and computer-controlled CATS dampers will take care of mid-corner bumps.

Even at speeds of 70 to 80 mph, Cross says the aerodynamic changes to the XKR-S bring more rear downforce and stability. Lift is reduced by 60 percent up front and 17 percent at the rear, with a 3 percent reduction in drag. The most noticeable visual change is a larger rear spoiler, still subtle, which is a big improvement at autobahn speeds (nearly 150 of the limited 200 run of XKR-Ss have gone to Germany; the other 50 are reserved for Britain).

Our main criticism is that the steering feels a little detached from what the tire contact patches are doing, in a way that a Porsche's doesn't, a comment that Cross is gracious enough not to bristle at.

"We have to work within the constraints of the basic platform, and we have an extremely driveable performance car in all conditions," is the level-headed response.

There's something else significant about the XKR-S. Jaguar is working on a facelifted XK with a new direct-injection 5.0-liter V8, to be launched mid-2009. In supercharged XKR form, this will offer close to 500 hp, and the inside line is that the stiffer XKR-S setup is a preview of this new chassis. With that in mind, customers for next year's XK are in for a special treat.jornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12024462461721457273noreply@blogger.com0
