OUR TAKE: Why is it we feel we've previously driven a Grand Caravan? Maybe because we've driven the Chrysler Town & Country, or the Volkswagen Routan--or because we've driven both?
Like those others, this is a great minivan: smooth ride, lots of room for hauling people and stuff, good sound system, comfy interior. But this doesn't stand out in any way except, of course, that it's noticeably less powerful than our long-term Chrysler Town & Country.
A full 54 hp less, in fact. And in this size of a vehicle it is not good, the difference in power between this old-school 3.8-liter V6 and the 4.0-liter spinner in our long-termer. Also noteworthy is that while this Dodge is fitted with nearly every electronic gadget as our T&C (power doors, entertainment system, back-up camera, uConnect, etc.), it is lacking the basic building block of a good electronics package: A navigation system. We may leave out the annoying pontoon running boards and add nav to get the kind of Caravan we'd prefer, but even then, the dropoff in trim and performance from a T&C is more than we'd probably like. For those shopping minivans on the bargain side, however, the Caravan is a good starting point. You get a lot of practical vehicle attributes shared with the T&C, but at more of a value price.
