Diesel VW Jetta to start at $22,640

Volkswagen's 50-state clean diesels, the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen, will carry sticker prices that start at $22,640 and $24,240, respectively, when they launch in August, including shipping charges.
The diesels are part of VW's six-vehicle U.S. product blitz this year, which includes the Touareg TDI diesel, Tiguan, Routan and Passat CC.
The EPA says that the Jetta TDI gets 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. VW, however, took it a step further and had a third-party tester flog the car in more realistic driving conditions, resulting in claims that it gets fuel economy of 38 mpg city and 44 mpg highway.
The Jetta comes standard with six airbags and electronic stability control. The 2.0-liter engine is a version of the powerplant that's been on sale in Germany for more than a year and has been modified to meet U.S. tailpipe rules.
VW last sold diesels in the United States in 2007. The Jetta had been due this spring, but last fall, VW said it had hit an undisclosed technical snag, and launch was delayed about six months.
VW and other European automakers have long been advocates of diesel technology. But as of Thursday, the average price of diesel fuel in the United States was $4.79 a gallon, according to AAA--just a few tenths of a cent under its record high. The average price of regular unleaded gasoline stood at $4.07,
